Hi
Thanks, Carrie!
That is a great software to introduce the pictures effective.
I'll put some videos about Taiwan on the blog soon. It seem not very hard to pick it up. Ha!
Carrie,
Well, in Stonington at the middle school level, grades 5-8, we are moving away from having a technology class to integrating technology into our instruction. This is starting this year. The building, along with our one other middle school in town, now has a classroom teacher act as the building's technology leader. This is not a person who maintains or repairs computers, we have other folks for that. This person helps teachers integrate and incorporate applications in class. For example, getting a class website going or getting used to our on-line grade book.(PowerGrade) I was hired as that person this year. I do not have a technology background, but I do use technology in my classroom quite a bit.
Mystic Middle School has about 500 students. Each teacher has their own desktop computer right now. The special education teachers have their own laptops. Each classroom has about 3 older computers to use as needed. We have on portable laptop cart with 12 units that anyone can sign up for at any time as long as it is not being used. We also have 2.5 computer labs we can sign up for as well. This is where we were in 07/08.
We also have a Century 21 committee for all the stakeholders in our district who are working together to get more technology woven into what we do in the classroom. David Warlick, writer of Raw Materials for the Mind, will be speaking to our district during professional Development on August 28 to help out with this cause as well.
I tried to sign in to the Animoto site. Your videos were great. There seemed to be some technical problems at this point signing up. However, I look forward to trying that out.
I also use open source applications in class with projects and assignments. We use Google Apps to 'share' documents, presentations, and spreadsheets among peers and teachers. The students each have their own account. Do you use any open source document sharing? I am looking for a fifth grade class still who might be interested in doing some peer editing/pen pals with writing.
With this being said, most teachers in my district do not use technology with their students to this extent.
So, because I do not have a strong background like you do with technology, any suggestions or tips are always welcomed here.
Does this help?
Greg
Perfect background Greg! My position requires me to do what you do with teachers as well as teach my own classes. That's interesting about having trouble setting up an animoto account. I am not sure if I mentioned another great application is Jing Project. It's a screen capture open source. I have not used a lot of open source as of yet. Last year was the first year of dedicated technology instruction and providing a strong foundation. This year I have plans as of right now to focus on using Wiki's, Blogs, Flickr, Animoto, and voicethread with students. I would love to use Google Aps but right now our students do not have accounts so that has provided a bit of a stumbling block.
Hello again! I made a quick Jing on registering for an Animoto account. I thought it might be helpful for Greg who mentioned he was having trouble getting signed up. It may help with any troubles that you may be having. It will also give you a sample in how JING works. It's great for quick little re-teaching bits. What I love about it is that you can embed it into a webpage or provide a URL link for students.
